An Act of Violence

This image was taken a few weeks ago from Turkey.

It shows a doctor who is badly injured after a paving stone was crashed against his head by a furious father of a child patient. The child was admitted to children’s emergency deparment of the Harran University hospital due to high fever. Treatment commenced at once. But the parents got agitated and started to harass health care providers complaining they are not being cared of sufficiently. According to victim-doctor, the father kept insulting to a fellow doctor which prompted him to warn the father for his words. But soon father’s hostility turned against him and he left the room. Doctors thought the quarrel came to an end. But in a blink of eye the father returned with a paving stone in his hand. Then he threw this stone to doctor. The doctor desperately tried to defend himself with his arm. But he got hit by pieces of smashed stone. Then a second blow came with another paving stone. Before the attacker intended for a 3rd blow, he was prevented by other people surrounding. Doctor was wounded on head and needed to be delivered to emergency room. The deep laceration on his head was sutured but he had to be kept under intensive-care unit  supervision for 36 hours due to brain hemorrhage risk. Fortunately he got discharged without any health problems.

In recent times, there have been many like violance instances witnessed in hospital enviroments and emergency room settings in Turkey. These events indicate to a serious underlying social issue for sure. But i’ll cover this in an another article.

According to a new, Turkey is the only country that the total emergency room admissions in one year exceed the population .This number is 130 million per year for the 324 million populated U.S.A (1).

This high admissions cause a conflict in emergency room settings and improper care. Besides, many health care professionals work beyond their maxium work hour limit per week (2). This added there is a huge disorder in health care services that needs to be adressed.
